Things to Keep in Mind Before Selling Your Car Interstate
Documents Required for Selling Your Car Interstate
Days have gone when you had to struggle to obtain documents from RTO and other authorities. With the digitization of departments and official processes, you can now get any document within a matter of days. Three types of documents are required for selling your car interstate viz. vehicle documents, personal documents, and documents from the RTO.
Vehicle Documents Required for the Sale of Car Interstate:
The vehicle documents that are mandatory for selling your car, whether it is interstate or within the state are:
Registration Certificate: RC is the first and foremost vehicle document you should have. It contains all the details about the vehicle, like registration number, owner’s name, engine number, chassis number, hypothecation if any, cubic capacity, registration year, etc. The RC (in original) has to be submitted to the RTO in the buyer’s state for formalities like ownership transfer.
Pollution Under Control (PUC): will state the emissions from the vehicle. A valid PUC has to be there with the vehicle.

The validity of the IC is also important. As per the extant Supreme Court order, all the vehicles being sold second-hand should have Insurance validity of at least 03 to 05 years.
All three vehicle documents mentioned here are mandatorily required for both interstate and within the state sale of a vehicle. Duplicate RC must be obtained if you have misplaced it. Extend PUC and insurance if those are not valid.

Personal Documents:
Documents proving the identity and address of both the buyer and seller are required. A close scrutiny might be required at times to confirm the authenticity of the documents:
Residence proof that clearly states the address of the buyer and seller is required. The copy of residence proof must be self-attested.
A PAN card is a document issued by the Income Tax Department of India. It will contain the tax details of the individuals. Self-attested copies of PAN cards of both parties are required.
Recently taken passport-size color Photographs of both the buyer and seller for completing the vehicle transfer formalities.
We suggest you comply with the orders and complete the vehicle transfer at the earliest. It would be preferable to conclude all the formalities in fourteen days. The relevant RTO must be informed and an application for ownership transfer has to be submitted as and when vehicle sales take place. It can be problematic if the car remains in your name for days subsequent to the sale.
Documents from the RTO for Interstate Sales of the Car:
A set of forms has to be collected from the relevant RTO, filled in, and submitted for processing interstate sales and completing the ownership transfer:
RTO Form 28, the No Objection Certificate (NOC) will state the willingness for the sale of the vehicle. Three copies of NOC have to be submitted, to the RTO in the buyer’s state, with a pencil print of the chassis number on it. Form 28 may not be required if the sale is taking place within the state. On the other hand, there are exceptions to this as well. Some states need NOC even during the sale intrastate.
RTO Form 29 or Notice of Transfer of Ownership of a Motor Vehicle is another main document that has to be filled and submitted to the RTO in duplicate. Both the buyer and seller should sign the document and submit it along with passport-size photographs of both parties.
Form 30, the Intimation and Transfer of Ownership of the Motor Vehicle (Form 30) has to be filled and signed by both the buyer and seller. Two copies of the form along with color passport-size photographs of both persons are to be submitted to the RTO.
A report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is crucial for selling your car interstate. The subject report is for ensuring that the car hasn’t been used for any criminal activities. Road tax for the stipulated period has to be paid in the new state where it would be registered.
